Midsummer traditions in Scandinavia

June is the time of midsummer in the northern hemisphere and it culminates in the Nordics between 21 and 24 June. The 21st June is the summer solstice and 24th June is St Hans. As with so many ancient celebrations the Christian church has adopted them and they have become one and the same celebration. You'd think that throughout the Nordic counties (and the Baltics too) that the midsummer celebrations would be the same but they are not. It can all be rater confusing if you arrive in Scandinavia for a midsummer celebration and find that each country is celebrating on a different day!
