Fiskegrateng (fish gratin), a nostalgic taste of Norway

Norwegian fiskegrateng, fish gratin

Fiskegrateng is one of those familiar comfort foods to many people in Norway. It reminds them of their childhood, of colder autumnal days coming home from school to the delicious smell of a favourite meal cooking.

The dish itself is probably not that old, dating from around the 1970s, an era that is remembered fondly to many. In lots of ways it's so simple and comforting, but we can elevate this lovely traditional dish into something a bit more special with a few additions that add a more luxurious feel to it. Add a little baby leaf salad and you have a wonderful balanced meal that makes us feel all warm and cosy inside.

So shall we take a step back into 1970s Norway and make dinner?
